5 days in Montenegro Itinerary: Tips for visiting Montenegro

Montenegro’s culture is a rich tapestry woven from its history, where Byzantine, Ottoman, and Venetian influences meld seamlessly. Here you can explore the mediaeval charm of Kotor’s old town, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, or bask in the serene beauty of Lake Skadar, which teems with wildlife. 

From the vibrant nightlife in Budva to the tranquil monasteries perched on mountain tops, Montenegro invites you to delve into its plethora of attractions and unique traditions. And this detailed guide will help you to do just that!

Getting to Montenegro: Arrival at Podgorica Airport

The easiest way to get to Montenegro is by flying to the capital city of Podgorica. I flew from Charleroi Airport in Belgium to Podgorica Airport. If you are flying from North America, then you will most likely have a stopover in London, UK, Amsterdam Netherlands or Zagreb Croatia before arriving in Montenegro. 

If you are already in Croatia, you can also travel to Kotor, Montenegro from Dubrovnik – this route can be easily done by car and/or bus. I recommend checking car rental options (dos and don’ts) if you are planning to drive to Montenegro from Croatia as cross border rentals may incur additional costs.

However, it is a breeze to pick up car rental from Podgorica Airport. And that is what I did – I booked a rental car online for a seamless travel experience, and I was on my way to our first stop.

Day 1: Arrival and Drive to Skadar Lake National Park

As soon as you arrive in Montenegro in the capital city of Podgorica, pick up your car rental and make your way to Skadar Lake National Park. 

Drive to Skadar Lake National Park

• Travel Time: Approximately 30 minutes from Podgorica Airport.
• Scenic Route: Enjoy the lush landscapes as you drive towards Skadar Lake, the largest lake in the Balkans.

Day one of the Montenegro itinerary is all about settling in and getting ready for adventures ahead. 

I recommend staying at the Hotel Pelikan. Located near the lake in Virpazar, this hotel offers traditional Montenegrin hospitality and breathtaking views.

Virpazar serves as a gateway to the lake and is renowned for its charming ambiance and welcoming locals. It’s an excellent starting point for sightseeing as well as boat tours that take you deeper into the park, revealing hidden coves and ancient islets.

Day 2: Skadar Lake National Park and Kotor

Kickstart your morning at the Skadar Lake National Park. Skadar Lake National Park is a paradise for nature lovers and history enthusiasts alike, offering a captivating blend of rich biodiversity and cultural heritage. 

The park is home to the largest lake in the Balkans, Skadar Lake, which straddles the border between Montenegro and Albania. This expansive body of water, with its crystalline clarity and serene beauty, serves as a natural haven for a variety of wildlife, making it one of the most important bird reserves in Europe. 

It is home to over 280 species of birds, including the rare Dalmatian pelican, which has become an emblem of the park. Birdwatchers will relish the opportunity to witness these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. 

The lake’s waters, teeming with freshwater fish, also make it a popular spot for fishing and boating.

Start your day with a boat tour on Skadar Lake. All boat tours leave from Virpazar and last 3 hours. You can also opt for a guided boat trip for 1 hour, or head out on a kayak on your own. 

The boating trip will welcome you to impressive wetlands, lily-covered bays, and rugged mountains providing a picturesque backdrop. 

History buffs will also enjoy the area. This area is dotted with historical monuments, including mediaeval monasteries, fortresses, and churches that bear testament to the region’s storied past. 

The Lesendro Fortress, perched on a hill overlooking the lake, offers panoramic views and a fascinating insight into the area’s strategic importance throughout history. Additionally, the Vranjina monastery provides peaceful retreats where visitors can admire centuries-old frescoes and architectural marvels.

The park offers numerous hiking and biking trails that weave through this diverse terrain, allowing you to fully immerse themselves in its natural beauty. 

One of the best view points over the lake are the Pavlova Strana Viewpoint & Vidikovac Godinje – and I highly recommend adding it to your Montenegro itinerary.

As you explore, you’ll encounter traditional fishing villages where time seems to have stood still, their stone houses and narrow pathways offering a glimpse into the region’s pastoral life. 

No visit to Skadar Lake National Park would be complete without indulging in the local cuisine. The region is famous for its organic produce, including the renowned Skadar carp, a traditional delicacy often prepared with a unique blend of Mediterranean herbs. I recommend a nice lunch before making your way to Kotor. 

Take it easy, go souvenir shopping and then drive to Kotor where you will be staying overnight and exploring for the next 2 days.

• Travel Time: Approximately 1.5 hours from Skadar to Kotor.

Sightseeing Guide for Kotor

Kotor is a coastal town in Montenegro, nestled between the stunning mountains and the Adriatic Sea. Known for its well-preserved mediaeval architecture and historic charm, Kotor offers a wealth of sights to explore. 

Depending on the time you have in your hands, you can wander through the narrow streets of this UNESCO World Heritage site in the evening. 

Day 3: Kotor and beyond

Day 3 is all about sightseeing in Kotor. I will share all the must dos in the city (and make note if you have extra days in Montenegro as you can check off more attractions). 

Here’s what to explore in Kotor:

Old Town Kotor (Stari Grad)

Begin your exploration in the heart of Kotor’s Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Wander through its narrow, cobblestone streets and discover a labyrinth of squares and alleys brimming with history. 

Look out for:

• St. Tryphon’s Cathedral: This Romanesque cathedral dates back to 1166 and is dedicated to Kotor’s patron saint. Its twin towers and interior frescoes are noteworthy.
• Sea Gate (Main Gate): The main entrance to the Old Town, the Sea Gate was constructed in 1555 and stands as a testimony to Kotor’s architectural prowess.
• Maritime Museum: Housed in the 18th-century Grgurina Palace, this museum showcases Kotor’s rich maritime history with an impressive collection of artefacts.

Kotor Fortress

For breathtaking panoramic views of Kotor Bay, hike up to the Kotor Fortress, also known as St. John’s Fortress. The 1,350-step climb is challenging but rewarding, offering a vantage point that captures the town’s beauty and the surrounding landscapes.

• Hike up the old fortress at sunset 
• From the city centre, you can hike up an old fortress. It will take you around 30-40 minutes one way
• Entrance: €8
• Best time to go: Two hours before sunset time (perfect to soak in the sunset hues!)

Church of Our Lady of Remedy

Along your hike to the fortress, stop at the Church of Our Lady of Remedy. This small, 16th-century church provides a peaceful rest spot and picturesque views of the bay.

Kotor Market

Experience local culture and flavours at the vibrant Kotor Market, located just outside the Old Town walls. Here, you’ll find fresh produce, local cheeses, olives, and traditional Montenegrin pastries.

Bay of Kotor

Take a scenic boat tour around the Bay of Kotor, often referred to as Europe’s southernmost fjord. The bay’s calm waters and dramatic mountainous backdrop create an unforgettable setting. 

Highlights include stops at the picturesque island of Our Lady of the Rocks and the historic town of Perast. 

Perast is one of the most beautiful and peaceful towns on Montenegro’s coast. If you’re looking for a quiet and relaxing vacation, you’ll love it. (This is a great place to extend your trip and go sightseeing).

Clock Tower

Standing proudly in the main square of the Old Town is the Clock Tower, built in the 17th century. This landmark is not only a navigational aid but also a popular meeting spot for both locals and tourists.

Gurdic Gate

End your sightseeing tour with a visit to Gurdic Gate, another significant historical entrance to the Old Town. This southern gate is less crowded than the main gate and allows for a more intimate glimpse into Kotor’s defensive architecture.

Day 4 – 5: Durmitor National Park

For the last leg of your 5 day Montenegro itinerary, drive to one of the most popular places – Durmitor National Park. 

• Travel Time: Approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes from Kotor
• Accommodation: Hotel Soa – A boutique hotel located in the heart of Durmitor, providing cosy rooms and mountain views

Durmitor National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is renowned for its dramatic landscapes, towering peaks, and pristine glacial lakes. This park is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts who can indulge in various activities, from hiking and mountaineering to simply soaking in the awe-inspiring scenery. 

Here are some must-do activities while visiting Durmitor National Park.

Hiking Trails

Durmitor offers a range of hiking trails suitable for all levels of experience, each providing breathtaking views and a unique way to experience the park’s natural beauty.

• Bobotov Kuk: Standing at 2,500 metres, Bobotov Kuk is the highest peak in the park and offers one of the most rewarding hikes. The trek to the summit takes approximately 5-6 hours round trip and is suitable for experienced hikers. The trail winds through lush forests, rocky terrain, and alpine meadows, culminating in panoramic views of the surrounding mountain ranges.
• Black Lake (Crno Jezero): One of the most popular and easily accessible trails is the path around Black Lake. This pristine glacial lake, surrounded by dense pine forests and towering peaks, offers a serene 4.7 kilometre walk that can be completed in about an hour and some. The mirror-like surface of the lake reflects the majestic mountains, making it a favourite spot for photographers.
• Ice Cave (Ledena Pećina): This hike is a bit more challenging but well worth the effort. The trail starts from the Sedlo Pass, leading hikers through rocky paths and grassy slopes to the captivating Ice Cave. Inside, you’ll find stunning ice formations that remain year-round. The hike takes about 5 hours round trip.
• Jablan Lake: For a more moderate hike, the trail to Jablan Lake offers a pleasant 8-kilometre trek. The route takes you through meadows filled with wildflowers and offers great opportunities to spot local wildlife. The sparkling blue waters of the lake provide a perfect spot for a picnic and relaxation.

Other Sightseeing and Activities

Beyond hiking, Durmitor National Park offers a variety of other activities that allow visitors to appreciate the park’s diverse beauty.

• Tara River Canyon: Often referred to as the “Tear of Europe,” the Tara River Canyon is Europe’s deepest canyon and offers some of the best white-water rafting experiences. The river is known for its crystal-clear waters and thrilling rapids. Whether you are a seasoned rafter or a first-timer, guided tours are available to suit all levels.
• Đurđevića Tara Bridge: This iconic bridge spans the Tara River and offers spectacular views of the canyon. It’s a marvel of engineering and provides a perfect spot for photography. It is the second tallest bridge in Montenegro. For thrill-seekers, bungee jumping off the bridge is an unforgettable experience.
• Savin Kuk Ski Resort: If you’re visiting in winter, Durmitor transforms into a winter wonderland. Savin Kuk offers excellent skiing and snowboarding opportunities. The slopes cater to all skill levels, and the resort provides rental equipment and lessons.

Durmitor is not just about outdoor activities; it’s also steeped in cultural history. There are churches, monasteries and necropolises to explore.

• Churches: The church of Svetog Preobrazenja in Zabljak, church of Svetog Preobrazenja, church of St Nikola in Tepci, the church of St George in Novakovici
• Old Village of Njegovuđa: This charming village offers a glimpse into traditional Montenegrin life. Wandering through Njegovuđa, you can see historical stone houses, taste local cheese, and enjoy the warm hospitality of the villagers.
• Monastery of Saint Archangel Michael: Located near the town of Pljevlja, this serene monastery offers a quiet retreat and a chance to learn about the region’s spiritual history. The monastery’s peaceful surroundings and beautiful frescoes make it a worthwhile visit.

I spent about 10+ days in Montenegro and in various natural and cultural sites, and thoroughly loved it – can’t wait to go back!

Day 1: Arrival and explore Podgorica

Podgorica, the capital city of Montenegro, is a vibrant blend of history, culture, and modernity, offering visitors a plethora of activities and attractions to explore. 

Once you arrive in the city, spend your first day exploring a few of the popular attractions,

• Stara Varoš (Old Town): This area boasts a mix of Ottoman and Mediterranean architecture, featuring narrow streets, historic buildings, and charming cafes. Key highlights include the Clock Tower and the Old Turkish Bath.
• King’s Park: A lovely spot for a leisurely stroll or a picnic, King’s Park is a green oasis in the heart of the city. The park features beautiful landscaping, fountains, and statues, making it a relaxing retreat from the urban bustle.
• Millennium Bridge: One of the most iconic landmarks in Podgorica, the Millennium Bridge spans the Morača River and offers stunning views of the city. It’s particularly beautiful when illuminated at night.
• Ribnica River and Roman Bridge: The confluence of the Ribnica and Morača rivers offers picturesque views and the remains of a Roman bridge. This area is perfect for a peaceful walk or some quiet contemplation by the water.
• Podgorica City Museum: For those interested in learning about the local history and culture, this museum offers various exhibitions on the city’s rich heritage, from prehistoric times to the present day.
• Niagara Falls or Vodopad Nijagara: Located just outside Podgorica, these stunning falls on the Cijevna River are an unexpected natural wonder. They’re best visited in the spring or fall when water levels are higher.

• Hilton Podgorica Crna Gora: This luxurious hotel offers elegantly furnished rooms and top-notch amenities, including a spa, rooftop bar, and several dining options. Its central location makes it a perfect base for exploring the city.
• Hotel Ziya: Known for its modern design and comfortable accommodations, Hotel Ziya provides excellent service and a range of facilities including a wellness centre and an indoor pool. It’s conveniently situated near many of Podgorica’s attractions.

Podgorica promises an enriching experience with its blend of cultural sites, natural beauty, and welcoming hospitality. Whether you’re savouring local cuisine in the Old Town, walking across the Millennium Bridge, or exploring historical ruins, if you have extra time do add the capital city to your itinerary!

Day 2 – 3: Lake Skadar National Park 

Drive to Skadar Lake National Park the next day, and explore the various natural wonders (itinerary as listed above).

Day 4 – 5: Kotor and Piva Canyon Viewpoint

Spend one day in Kotor (itinerary as above), and on your second day you can add Budva, or Stari Bar and end the day with travel to Piva Canyon in the evening.

For day 5, travel to Budva on a day trip. Kotor to Budva is 30 minutes by car. 

A half day trip to Budva is a perfect way to experience this coastal gem’s blend of history, culture, and natural allure. 

• Budva Old Town: Start your visit within the mediaeval walls of Budva Old Town (Stari Grad). Wander through its narrow cobblestone streets, explore ancient churches like St. John’s and Holy Trinity, and marvel at the town’s historic fortifications. The old town is full of charming boutiques, local cafes, and hidden treasures that evoke a sense of the past.
• Mogren Beach: Next, take a walk to Mogren Beach, one of Budva’s most scenic spots. Surrounded by cliffs and lush greenery, this picturesque beach offers a tranquil retreat where you can soak up the sun or dip your toes into the clear Adriatic waters. For some adventure, stroll along the scenic pathway connecting Mogren Beach to the old town, offering breathtaking views of the coastline.
• Local Cuisine: No trip to Budva is complete without enjoying some local cuisine. Head to Jadran Kod Krsta, a well-loved seaside restaurant offering delicious seafood and Montenegrin specialties. Enjoy a leisurely lunch with stunning views of the harbour and the sparkling sea.
• Citadel: Wrap up your half-day in Budva with a visit to the Citadel, an ancient fortress offering panoramic views of the bay and the surrounding islands. The Citadel also houses a museum where you can learn more about Budva’s storied past.

With its rich history, beautiful beaches, and vibrant atmosphere, Budva promises an unforgettable half-day experience that’s both relaxing and inspiring.

From Budva, drive to Piva Canyon. It is about a 3 hour drive. Plan to spend the night in Pluzine after sightseeing. 

Nestled in the rugged mountains of Montenegro, the Piva Canyon Viewpoint offers travellers one of the most stunning panoramic views in the country. This breathtaking lookout point is situated above the deep, turquoise waters of the Piva River, which winds its way through the dramatic cliffs of the canyon. 

For this itinerary, you can visit the viewpoint and soak in the awe-inspiring vista of the rugged landscape, where the combination of towering rock formations and the shimmering river below creates a picture-perfect scene.

Aside from the captivating views, Piva Canyon is also a gateway to a range of outdoor activities. There are boat tours along Lake Piva that you can enjoy, or engage in exhilarating rafting trips down the river’s rapids. 

Hiking trails around the viewpoint allow for deeper exploration of this natural wonder, providing opportunities to witness diverse flora and fauna up close. (Note that you will need an extra day for this, feel free to customise this itinerary for that.)

Day 6 – 7: Durmitor National Park

Travel to Durmitor National Park from Pluzine. Driving time is 45 minutes. Stay and explore the area for the next 2 days (itinerary as above). 

Day 8: National Park Biogradska Gora

Next, make a trip to National Park Biogradska Gora. It is located only 30 minutes away from Durmitor (so you can also return and stay overnight in Durmitor National Park).

Nestled in the heart of Montenegro, National Park Biogradska Gora is a place where nature remains pristine and wild. It is recognized as one of the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves. This park is one of the last three large virgin rainforests in Europe and offers an unparalleled experience of untouched natural beauty. 

Covering an area of around 54 square kilometres, Biogradska Gora is renowned for its lush greenery, crystal-clear lakes, and abundance of diverse flora and fauna. 

Here’s how to make the most of your visit to this magnificent wilderness.

Sightseeing in Biogradska Gora

When it comes to sightseeing, Biogradska Gora presents a plethora of remarkable spots:

• Biogradsko Lake: At the heart of the park lies Biogradsko Lake, a sparkling gem surrounded by dense forest and rugged mountains. The lake is accessible via a scenic, well-marked trail. The loop around the lake is a must-do, offering picturesque views and perfect photo opportunities.
• Katun Villages: These traditional shepherd settlements provide a glimpse into the rustic lifestyle of the Montenegrin highlands. Visiting a katun village gives you a chance to immerse yourself in the local culture and enjoy culinary delights such as homemade cheese and bread.
• Pešića Lake: Higher up in the mountains, this glacial lake captivates visitors with its pristine beauty. The trek to Pešića Lake is another rewarding hike that takes you through dense forests and alpine meadows.

Planning a trip to Biogradska Gora requires a bit of preparation to ensure you have a fulfilling and safe experience:

• Getting There: The park is less than a two-hour drive from Podgorica. Renting a car is the most convenient option, allowing you to explore the surroundings at your own pace. Alternatively, you can take a bus to the nearby town of Kolašin and then a taxi to the park.

• Best Time to Visit: The ideal time to visit Biogradska Gora is during the late spring to early autumn months (May to September). During this period, the weather is mild, and the flora is in full bloom, enhancing the park’s beauty. Autumn, with its vibrant foliage, also offers a spectacular sight.

• Wildlife Watching: Biogradska Gora is home to an array of wildlife, including bears, wolves, and over 150 species of birds. Bring binoculars for bird watching and maintain a respectful distance from wildlife. This ensures both your safety and that of the animals.

• Permits and Fees: There is an entry fee to the park, which is used for its maintenance and conservation. Fees are generally reasonable and can be paid at the main entrance. (It is around 3-4 euros per person).

National Park Biogradska Gora promises an unforgettable immersion into Montenegro’s natural splendour. Whether you’re hiking through ancient forests, gazing at mirrored lakes, or simply enjoying the serene environment, the park offers something for every nature lover. 

Day 9 – 10: Prokletije National Park

Tucked away in the southernmost part of Montenegro, Prokletije National Park is an adventurer’s paradise. 

Also known as the “Accursed Mountains,” this park is part of a stunning mountain range that stretches across Montenegro, Albania, and Kosovo. 

Renowned for its dramatic peaks, deep valleys, rivers, and diverse ecosystems, Prokletije offers an unparalleled wilderness experience. Whether you’re an avid hiker, a nature enthusiast, or someone seeking tranquillity away from the bustling city life, Prokletije National Park is a must-visit destination. 

Here’s how to make the most of your visit.

Hiking in Prokletije National Park

For those eager to explore the park on foot, Prokletije boasts some of the most exhilarating and scenic trails in the Balkans. 

Here are a few must-try hikes:

• Krosnja – Šuplja vrata (Kissing Cats): This is meant for experienced hikers, and the trail takes 5+ hours and has various unmarked paths but it wonderfully brings you to a natural arch which is called named Šuplja vrata, aka Kissing Cats.
• Volušnica (2057 m): This is a moderate hike offering an incredible view of the Karanfili peaks. You will need 5+ hours to complete the route.

• Valbona Pass: This cross-border trail connects Prokletije National Park with the Valbona Valley in Albania. It’s a historical route with beautiful forests, rivers, and peaks all along the way. This trail requires proper planning as it involves border crossings and overnight stays (6 to 8 hours one way).

• Hrid Lake: Nestled among high mountains, this tranquil glacial lake offers a perfect spot for a peaceful retreat. The hike to Hrid Lake provides magnificent views surrounded by dense forests and alpine meadows.

Proper planning is essential to make your visit to Prokletije National Park enjoyable and safe. Here are some tips to guide your preparations:

• Getting There: The perfect base to explore the park is Grebaje Valley. You can drive there or use public transportation until Gusinje, and then take a taxi to the park entrance. 
• The park is about a 4 hour drive from Kotor. 

• Permits and Fees: Entry to the park is 3 euros per person per day. If you are planning to cross the border and stay overnight additional permits are required.

• Accommodation: Gusinje provides various accommodation options, including hotels, guesthouses, and cottages. For a more immersive experience, consider staying at one of the rustic mountain huts within the park, but ensure you book in advance, especially during peak seasons.

• Best Time to Visit: The best time to visit Prokletije National Park is from late spring to early autumn (May to September). During this period, the weather is favourable, trails are more accessible, and you can fully appreciate the park’s natural beauty.

Prokletije National Park is a destination that promises awe-inspiring landscapes, rich biodiversity, and challenging yet gratifying adventures. 

Travel Tips for Visiting all the trails and parks in Montenegro
